CNS Update: Pregabalin for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder

Pregabalin has a complex mechanism of action. Its an antiepileptic drug, also used to treat neuropathic pain and generalized anxiety disorder. Clinical trials have shown the efficacy of pregabalin comparable to benzodiazepines, without risk of abuse.

 

The present study assessed the efficacy of pregabalin in patients with generalized anxiety disorder. It used the Hamilton Anxiety Scale to assess anxiety and the CGI-therapeutic index to assess therapeutic efficacy.

 

Considering the studys results and psychological monitoring, the authors depicted that pregabalin can significantly improve anxious patients quality of life and guarantee a better prognosis.

 

This study shows pregabalin is efficacious for treating psychic and somatic symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder and is well tolerated by most patients.
